Community                          South Hadley is a suburban college community with a population of approximately 18,000 people.  We are located in the heart of the Pioneer Valley on the beautiful Connecticut River – 12 miles north of Springfield, 87 miles west of Boston, and 145 miles northeast of New York City.  It is home to the first navigable canal in the U.S. and the first women’s college, Mt. Holyoke College.  Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts are all within a short driving distance.

 

School                                   South Hadley is a four year comprehensive secondary school (grades 9 through 12) with an enrollment of 734 students.  South Hadley High School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of The College Board.  The ethnic composition of the student body is 89% Caucasian, and 5% Hispanic, 3% black, and 3% other.

Curriculum                          South Hadley offers four instructional levels based on skill development, interest, and motivation. Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Foreign Language.  All students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP Examinations in May.  Qualified juniors and seniors can also access the Dual Enrollment program to take courses at local colleges.  Additional AP, Accelerated (Acc), and College Preparatory (CP) courses are available to students through the Western Mass Virtual High School Consortium (VHS).  Vocational Educational courses are provided as a half -day off campus program through the Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Education Center in West Springfield, MA.

 

                                                Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to extend their learning through Connections, our community-based work program.  Students can earn credits for internships, community service, and work-study experiences.

 

Graduation                          Students must earn a minimum of 152 credits to graduate.

Requirements                      Core academic requirements include:          4 years English

    Calculation of the GPA:        
Our GPA is a weighted, cumulative grade point system that is computed at the end of each year.  English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Foreign Language are the only subjects included in the determination of GPA and class rank.
