ART CLUB

Pre-requisites (if any):

Students should be interested in the visual arts and in experimenting beyond the classroom.

Description:

The clubs activities involve outreach to the community via art experiences in nursing homes and children’s facilities, and visits to local artists.   Students use their artistic skills for fundraising to help pay for some field trip expenses and also provide art scholarships to graduating seniors.

Art trips will sometimes need volunteer parents to chaperone or to provide transportation.

What do I need to do to sign up for this activity?

Look and listen for signs and announcements regarding meetings; then all you need to do is show up!  You can join anytime.  Also, you should feel free to talk with Ms. Duffy.

 

CHESS CLUB

GAY/STRAIGHT ALLIANCE

HARLEQUINS

2nd Friday in October - One Act Play Competition, last weekend in January – Musical.  Rehearsals on Monday and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 5:00.

Description:

All students are eligible for Harlequins.  We perform 3 one act plays in early fall, perform a musical in the winter.

We also need people to build sets, run lights and work on the technical crew during shows.

IMPROV COMEDY

Description:

Students will learn and play theatre games specific to the art of improvisation. If you like “Whose Line Is It?” you’ll love improv!

You don’t need to be “funny” or tell jokes to do improve. You simply need to be an observant participant in life.

Come to a session early in September. It’s important to work together as a group, so we want participants to join early and play often.

 

INDOOR INNOVATIONS

Description:

A fun and upbeat competitive ensemble featuring percussion, colorguard and dance that competes throughout Massachusetts

JAZZ BAND

LATIN CLUB

Taking Latin classes

Description:

The Latin Club and Latin Honor Society is a group for students to learn    more about the civilization, language, literature and art of ancient Rome and Greece in a fun and informal setting.  The club is a member of the National Junior Classical League.  We will visit art exhibits in the area, do fundraising and volunteer work, plan events, attend Classics Day at UMass, and play Certamen trivia games!  Club members who maintain at least a 90% average and demonstrate good citizenship become eligible for the Latin Honor Society each year.  Members are also eligible for various national scholarships.

Students in the Latin Honor Society serve as tutors, volunteers, mentors, and attempt to aid those in need.

LEO CLUB

Description:

                    

The Leo Club, now in its third year, is a community service club focused on helping children.  It is supported by the local Lions Club of South Hadley,.  The Leos have sponsored the “Walk for Mike” the past two years, raising more than $1,000 for South Hadley schools.  The club fosters Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity.

Students can use membership in this club for community service requirements.

MATH TEAM

Dates Activity Normally Occurs:

The Math team is active from October through February and meets on Tuesday afternoons, once a month for competition.

Pre-requisites (if any):

Good Math student

Description:

Six students make up a team for competition with 22 other Western Mass High Schools.  Categories include: Number Theory, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Coordinate Geometry, and Trigonometry.  Each student must complete 3 categories of a 10 minute test composed of 3 questions.

Students will take a school bus for away meets.  Students can participate in 1 to 5 meets.

 

 

MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB

Thursdays at 3:00 at Batchelor Street access in Granby – Mt. Holyoke Reservation.

Pre-requisites (if any):

Mountain bike, helmet

Description:

We love riding single-track!  Rides usually last an hour and a half to two hours.  Trails vary from beginner to expert but they’re all awesome trails!

When the snow starts flying we still meet and learn about bike repair and watch mountain bike videos.

Come to our first meeting in early September.

 

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Dates Activity Normally Occurs:

The society meets and is involved in activities throughout the year.  New members are inducted in the fall.

Pre-requisites (if any):

Juniors and seniors who maintain a 3.50 grade-point average are academically qualified to submit a portfolio for membership consideration.  Submission of the portfolio does not guarantee selection to the National Honor Society.

Description:

The NHS is a service group that functions as a way for students to make their school community and their community outside of school a better place.

Any other pertinent information for students/parents to know:

Membership in the NHS is a privilege, not a right.  Students selected for membership are expected to serve as role models for their peers.  Active involvement in NHS fundraisers, service projects and meetings is required for a student to maintain his/her membership.

What do I need to do to sign up for this activity?

Academically eligible students will be contacted by Ms. Young in September.  They must then attend an informational meeting and complete and submit a portfolio which will be reviewed by the Faculty Council.  Students will be notified as to whether they have been selected or not in October

 

PEACE CLUB

Open to anyone who wants to learn about and advance the cause of peace, locally and globally.

Description:

The group promotes the open and free discussion of issues pertaining to U.S. government policy and world events, and participates in efforts to promote peaceful resolutions of conflicts.

PEER LEADERS

Dates Activity Normally Occurs:

Peer Leaders meet monthly on Fridays at a mutually-agreed-upon time.  Special meetings are called as needed.

Pre-requisites (if any):

Peer Leaders are chosen by an application process once per year.  Two teacher recommendations are required.  Open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.  Peer Leaders are students who are comfortable being seen as positive role models.

Description:

Peer Leaders is a group of students chosen through a screening process which includes input from the school administrations.  Peer Leaders take part in a number of school-related activities intended to promote civility and respect, positive healthy behaviors, and leadership skills.

It is considered to be both leadership training and community service to be chosen as a member of the Peer Leaders group.

Apply to be selected in December.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

None, but it helps if students have their own digital camera

Description:

The club is open to any student who is interested in photography as a hobby or a career. Each week we discuss a different photography technique or subject and practice taking photos in and around the school. Students get to meet with local photographers to learn new skills. We use Adobe Photoshop to enhance, transform, and print images. There is a great opportunity for students to get their photographs published in the school newspaper and yearbook, as well as other community publications.

SCIENCE CLUB

The Science Club meets regularly on the 4th Tuesday of every month.  Look for the Red Science Club banner hanging outside of Ms. Cooley’s room.

Pre-requisites (if any):

None - Open to all students

Description:

Any student interested in being involved in science activities in a relaxed environment is invited to join the Science Club.  Activities are chosen by the students, and have included a star-gazing evening, a pizza-video evening, a geology hike, a field trip to a radio telescope, The Boston Aquarium, NYC’s Natural History Museum, The Quabbin, UMass’s Cold Spring Orchard, and conducting Middle School Science Club labs.

The Science Club is a comfortable place to belong and spend time with friends.  You don’t need to be a top student in science classes to join.  If you enjoy nature or have ever been curious about how something works, you are a good candidate for the Science Club.  Find a friend and join together.  If you are applying for a job or college, having the Science Club on your resume will strengthen your application.

 SKI/SNOWBOARD CLUB

January and February, weather permitting.

Description:

Ski or snowboard at Berkshire East for 6 Thursdays after school, returning at 8pm.  Equipment rental and lessons available.  Lots of challenging hills as well as east ones.  There is a terrain park as well for the daring!

S.M.A.C. (Students Making a Change)

SPOTLIGHT

Desire to share fair, honest, and wholesome journalism.

Description:

The Spotlight is a student produced monthly newspaper. It is open to any student interested in experiencing the many facets of publishing.  There are numerous positions students may pursue, such as editors, reporters, columnists, photographers, artists, and graphic designers.

Any other pertinent information for students/parents to know:

Staff members will be chosen after the second meeting in September. Other positions are open throughout the year.

What do I need to do to sign up for this activity?

Listen for announcements or inquire with contact persons.

 

STUDENT COUNCIL

Dates Activity Normally Occurs:

Student Council meets weekly at 6:50AM, before school.  Sometimes more frequently, if needed.

Pre-requisites (if any):

A genuine interest in student government and community service. 

Description:

Student Council representatives (6 per class) are elected on an annual basis.  They represent the interests of their particular classes.  Representatives are instrumental in the implementation of school activities or changes.  They also participate in a number of charitable activities ranging from food drives, scholarships and fundraisers.

Any other pertinent information for students/parents to know:

Freshman elections are held shortly after school starts in the fall.  Interested students should fill out a nomination form and have it signed by students in your class. 

What do I need to do to sign up for this activity?

Students run for office on a yearly basis.  Watch the announcements for dates and times.

 

TIGER TIMES

Pre-requisites (if any):

Desire to learn more about journalism, broadcasting technology and communications

Description:

There are many positions available at TIGER TIMES.  Jobs include teleprompter/writer, cameramen, anchors, directors, producers and editors.

Students have the option to film extra curricular activities which occur after school and at night as well as production of special editions.

Pick up an application sheet from the Media Studio or any member and return it to TIGER TIMES staff.


VOCAL ROAR

GATEWAY YEARBOOK

An interest in photography, graphic arts and writing are required.

Description:

Be a part of a winning team that puts together the high school’s gold medal award winning yearbook:  layout pages, snap pictures, write great articles—students do it all on the yearbook

Any other pertinent information for students/parents to know:

One caution: great work takes time, and you will have to spend some afternoons in the high school yearbook office.
